Claude Code stops with a usage limit message and no clear answer about when you can work again. The reason it feels random is that the 5 hour window is rolling. It starts on the first prompt of your session, not at the top of the hour and not at midnight, so the reset time is different every day.

How this works. The 5 hour window is rolling and starts with the first prompt of a session, not on a fixed clock hour, so it ends 5 hours after that prompt whether you keep working or step away. Pausing does not pause the clock. Weekly caps sit on top of it and reset on their own 7 day cycle tied to your account. Your allowance is shared across Claude Code, the Claude apps, and Cowork, so heavy chat use eats into what Claude Code has left. Anthropic does not publish exact prompt or token caps per plan, so this tool does no capacity guessing: it answers the timing question only. Limits last changed on 2026-05-06, when the 5 hour limits were doubled for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans and the peak-hours reduction was dropped on Claude Code. Five hours after the first prompt of your session, not on a fixed clock hour. Send your first message at 10:20 and the window closes at 15:20. The window runs on wall-clock time, so stepping away for an hour does not extend it. Once it closes, your next prompt opens a fresh 5 hour window.
Why does my Claude Code limit reset at a different time each day?
Because the window is anchored to your own first prompt rather than to a shared schedule. A 9am start resets at 2pm. A 1pm start resets at 6pm. There is no fixed daily reset time, which is why a calculator is easier than guessing.
I waited 5 hours and I am still limited. What happened?
You almost certainly hit the weekly cap rather than the session window. Weekly limits sit on top of the 5 hour window and run on their own 7 day cycle tied to your account. Waiting out a 5 hour window does not restore weekly capacity. Check which limit you hit in Claude Code with the usage command, or on your Claude account usage page.
Does using Claude on the web use up my Claude Code limit?
Yes. Claude Code, the Claude apps, and Cowork draw from the same allowance on your account. A heavy chat session in the browser leaves less for Claude Code inside the same window.
Does running Claude Code on a server give me more usage?
No. The limits follow your Anthropic account, not the machine, so a cloud box gets exactly the same quota as your laptop. What changes is whether the window gets used. On an always-on box the agent keeps working while your laptop is shut, so the hours you already pay for produce finished work.
How do I see how much quota I have left?
Run the usage command inside Claude Code, which older builds call status, or open the usage page on your Claude account. Both show what is left in the current window and against the weekly cap.
